Who doesn’t love a hot crispy roti filled with fresh salad, sauces, and fillings… I know I do.
I had the recent pleasure of heading back to one of my favourite eateries in Tauranga Crossing- Hawker and roll.
Hawker & Roll serve up fresh, Malaysian inspired street eats. Their fresh and delicious menu is a no-brainer when it comes to choosing lunch or dinner.
I tried the new ‘fish hawker’ – a hot roti filled with fresh fish, salads, and sauces with a peach iced tea. A perfect summer dinner that is both light and filling.
My friend Rata came with me and opted for the classic Laksa bowl, which we ended up taking home for leftovers as it was so big! If you’re keen for a hearty lunch or dinner, Iād 100% recommend this option.
If you’re not hungry, Hawker & Roll is a great location for date night or a gals night out. The drinks menu features delicious (and very photogenic) cocktails and mocktails. Our peach iced teas were Instagram in a glass.
I also put together a little background on Hawker & Roll for you all! See below for my Q&A with Manisha from Hawker & Roll.
Q – Tell me a bit about Hawker and Roll
A – Hawker and Roll is a part of the Go To Collection group; with Madam Woo and Rata also being a part of this group. Fleur Caulton teamed up with Chef Josh Emett founded the Go To Collection group in 2012 and started with Rata and Madam Woo. In 2017, the fast-casual spinoff of Madam Woo was created – Hawker and Roll; we currently have sites open in Auckland, Tauranga, Christchurch, and Queenstown.
Q – What kind of cuisine can I expect at Hawker and Roll?
At Hawker and Roll, we dish up Malaysian inspired street-eats cuisine, with vibrant and authentic flavours. ‘Hawker centres’ are very common in Malaysia, which is an open-air complex that houses many stalls providing a variety of street food. We pride ourselves on serving traditional Malaysian hawker-style food.
Q – What are you best known for?
I believe we are most known for our Hawker Rolls, our most popular items on the menu; that come in a variety of flavours, including, duck, pork, chicken, beef, jackfruit, eggplant, and prawn. They come served in a rolled roti canai, which is flakey and delicious, stuffed with amazing flavours that have come straight from the streets of Malaysia.
Q – Where do you source your ingredients from?
In terms of ingredient sourcing, we always feature locally sourced ingredients and strive to always use free-range meat and pesticide-free produce. We also aim to provide good for you options, whenever possible, including vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free, and sugar-free alternatives.
Q – What can people expect from going to the Hawker and Roll at the Crossing?
In your visit to a Hawker and Roll site, you can expect to be served food that is fun, fresh and delicious, with healthy options always available. We know people are the center of any business, so we work with, and hire, good people.
